What Do I Write?

We’ve established that I want to write and publish a novel, and that I write fiction. But what kind of fiction?

High fantasy. Dark fantasy. Fairytale fantasy as well.

Fantasy is where my artistic passion leads me time and time again. I firmly believe there’s not a story out there that can’t be improved with an airship or two.

Some folks say the genre is stagnant, but I believe it’s the most limitless. Entire worlds can be created without worrying about real-life historical events, or what is believed to be scientifically possible.

The only limitation in fantasy is the imagination. I can’t think of anything more liberating than that.

But it’s not just stream of consciousness, either. The world you build has to follow its own rules and set its own limitations.

Along the way, a good fantasy novel will give you a taste of all genres, from horror, to mystery, to romance, all doing their part to enhance an epic backdrop. When organically woven, these threads can catch the reader by surprise and be more effective because of it.

I believe the fantasy crowd is under-served, because there’s much left to be explored in the genre. So long as writers have the courage to be inventive and try new things, fantasy should be the last genre accused of being stagnant.
