Let’s explore this “Aeon of Horus“, find out more about who or what that really is.
We’ve successfully tied the work Promethea to Thelema and Aleister Crowley beyond a shadow of a doubt: Moore repeatedly and specifically refers to the Thoth Tarot deck, which is a deck exclusively used for divination designed by Aleister Crowley himself, and we know that Crowley self-identified as the “Aeon of Horus”.
So what is an Aeon? In Thelema, followers believe human history can be divided into aeons, time periods which are distinct from each other in terms of magick and religion.
So the “Aeon of Horus” is essentially a time period symbolized by the “child god” Horus, and/or a personification of that idea.
The First Aeon: “Aeon of Isis” – The time in prehistory where most of mankind worshipped the “Great Goddess”. Recall that Columbia and the Statue of Liberty are both manifestations of Isis.
The Second Aeon: “Aeon of Osiris” – The classical and medieval time periods during which mankind primarily worshipped a “singular male god”, thus establishing “The Patriarchy”.
The Third Aeon: “Aeon of Horus” – Apollo was known as “Horus the Elder”, whereas Horus, son of Isis and Osiris, is “Horus the Younger“. (This is one reason you’ll often see occultists referring to themselves as “_______ the Younger”.)
The “primary charge” of the third Aeon is/was: “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.” (Note that the word “law” is capitalized. That will be important in an upcoming post.) This concept is at the very heart of Luciferianism.
As I mentioned, Crowley claimed to be a personification of the Aeon of Horus, acting as if it was his divine duty to bring about the fourth Aeon.
The “Thelemites” (followers of Thelema) believe humanity will leave behind the “tyranny of the Abrahamic religions”, and believe the end of the third aeon will bring about “greater consciousness and self-actualization”.
Recall that the Eye of Horus represents the third eye, an “awakening” of greater consciousness/enlightement.
In other words, they want the worship of God, who is–in their view–a symptom of the “patriarchal” second aeon, to cease. And they believe this outcome (which they’ve predicted is inevitable) will come about through the vast spread of “enlightenment”.
Let’s take a look at the next part of the poem:
Apocalypse, as “World’s End” seen,
Need only Revelation mean,
Our world of ideas set alight,
By information, fierce and bright.
Card XX doesn’t refer to the end of the physical world; It refers to the end of the spiritual world.
“Enlightenment” brought to all through the spread of information, carried down “from the Heavens” via a lightning bolt. But this new era is going to be a Matriarchal one, thus Prometheus had to be changed to Promethea, just as “Liberty Enlightening the World” is actually a male cross-dressing as Isis.
Do you believe the fourth aeon is already upon us? If not, how do suppose the magi plan on bringing about the fourth aeon? And who is the fourth aeon?
